Items, variants, units of measure and barcodes
Prepare item records so billing, purchasing and inventory work with the same identity.
Before you begin
- Item master permission
- UOM/category/tax masters
- Product codes and variant options
Step-by-step instructions
Complete and verify each stage before continuing.
- 01
Decide the item structure
Determine whether each product is a physical good, service or variant family. Keep item naming consistent with how staff search at the counter.
- 02
Configure UOM records
Create the required units in the UOM master, including compound units only if needed and supported. Select them from the master instead of inventing text labels.
- 03
Add category and attributes
Create category, group and attribute values such as colour, size or finish. Link attributes to the product only when they affect selection or stock.
- 04
Create distinct variants
Assign the required SKU, tax class, selling rate and barcode to each transaction variant as applicable.
- 05
Review purchase and sale configuration
Check tax-inclusive versus exclusive prices and supported purchase/sales unit rules with the accounts team.
- 06
Test a search and transaction
Look up the item by name, code and barcode in a sample transaction. Verify the correct variant, rate, unit and stock context appear.
Final verification checklist
- Variants have distinguishable codes
- UOM comes from the master
- Tax and price settings agree with policy
